I finally found the friggin' little line in the third-party FAQ that tells me how to make the nicey-nice sounds in Finale louder than a whisper!

Literally what I had to go through:
  • Open the Instrument Setup tool.
  • Make sure I'm using Virtual Instruments, not beep-boop MIDI.
  • Hit Edit.
  • Search around until I finally find the volume slider for the outside-party's virtual audio rack, and slide it up from -15dB to 0dB.
  • Find out that the main program just resets the knob to quiet by taking control anyhow.
  • Search around for the tiny little "info" button that first sends me to a 404, and second sends me to this site.
  • Which gives me the q/a :
    Q: Finale - No Volume:

A:Set dynamic expressions to Controller and Volume.

Fortunately I've used Finale for a friggin' Decade, so I happen to know that what he MEANT to say was "If you are not controlling the volume of the Garritan Personal Orchestra in Finale, then when you try to place a dynamic expression, like forte, you have to click over to the Playback tab that is up at the top of the window, then change it from Key Velocity (which is how it's been done for years up until now when they changed it without telling us) to Controller, then skip the second box that I neglected to mention, then select "Volume," and finally type the volume value you wish to control.

Also: My parents are watching Food Network. Paula Dean sounds distressingly like Heath Ledger's Joker.

I shall be crossposting this. Ooohhh, I shall be crossposting this.

Subject:Open Key

Mood: ecstatic.
I finally learned how to easily do something in Finale that has been driving me nuts for years, so I thought I'd share.

If you want to write music with no key signature (open key/atonal) but you have transposing instruments in your score, click on the transposing instrument staves with the staff tool. Click on the "transposition" button (which should already be checked), and change the selected button from "key signature" to "chromatic." The staff will have the same transposition as before, but with no key signature! (When you copy something from one staff to another, it automatically transposes it to be the same sounding pitches, also.)

A friend of mine just told me how to do this, after I've been searching for years. You'd think this would be in the Finale help file somewhere, but no. I've always done it by changing each transposing instrument's staff attributes to "independent key signature" and then changing the key for that staff, but it was way more tedious, and copying and pasting to/from a transposing staff was always a nightmare. Now, if only you could make this the default instead of having to change it every time...

Subject:Need percussion help
Posted by:infintysquared.
Time:8:20 am.
Mood: creative.
Does anyone have any advice for making Percussion behave and sound decent in Finale 2008, especially with the GPO soundbank?

I'm a viola player by trade, so percussion is really one of the weakest gaps in my composing knowledge and experience.

Most specifically, I'd like to know how to get a good bass drum/timpani roll-crescendo up to a splash cymbal, and proper conga and timpani articulations.

I'm finally learning how to get the GPO KS voices working nicely, now that a keys player I met at a blues jam explained to me how KeySwitches work. Automating them through the articulation and expression tools makes everything work a lot easier now that I kinda know what I'm doing.

Subject:Percussion help?
Posted by:infintysquared.
Time:4:35 am.
Mood: artistic.
I'm looking to do timpani roll and cymbal splashes, but I've got no clue how to notate.

I have lots of music experience, but not with percussion, so I want to learn as a composer how NOT to piss off the percussionists. Also, I'd like to be able to make it work in Human Playback, if possible. I already know how to mask so the score looks right, I just need all the parts to mesh.

Using Finale 08, Garriton instruments when applicable, GM otherwise. I want to be able to hear this stuff done proper.

Anyone got a good thing going?

Does anyone have any tips on using percussion in Finale?

I'm writing a Requiem Mass, and beyond "Bass drum and teakettles," I'm at a loss.

Subject:notation rates
Posted by:teresabarrozo.
Time:2:01 am.
Hello listers!

I would like to know the usual rate for notation (with transposition)
in the US. Also, where do copyists usually base their pricing? (no. of pages
of manuscript given? bars?)I have a project and I need to notate and
transpose several voice + piano pieces and I need to give proper rates. =)

Thank you in advance!

I was going through some random forums trying to fix a technical issue with Finale, and I stumbled across this site.

I think the tutorials herein might do some good for some folks, and even the old hands could probably learn a new trick or two.

Subject:Lyrics linkage
Posted by:infintysquared.
Time:5:24 am.
Somehow I have managed to link two measures in entirely different parts of my song (I assume I must have been using Mass Edit-Drag'n'Drop Copy), and when I started entering lyrics, it mirrored those as well.

I'm assuming this is from some odd quirk when the file was updated to Finale '06 from a prior version. If I fix this measure to read "Blow-ing," the later measure gets "Blow- - - -" where it should say "rain,". And if I fix the later measure to say "rain," I have this "rain, ing" popping up in the earlier measure.

Any way I can break the link without completely rewriting the score?

I'm using Finale 2004 and I'm having a problem regarding expressions. I created the pizzicato expression without a problem. The violin is playing pizzicato until the viola comes in. The viola, however, is NOT pizzicato, but as soon as it joins the violins, it starts playing in that style, even though I never put "pizz." under it. So I created another expression for bowing regularly and applied it to the viola when it came in (even though it's supposed to bow regularly by default). So now the violin AND the viola are bowing regularly. I have pizz. under the violin and bow under the viola, but Finale refuses to play each part the way I tell it to. I deleted the line on the side that joined to two staffs together, but it didn't do anything.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Anybody know how to change the staff halfway through a measure? Everything I try ends up starting the staff change at the beginning of the measure.

Subject:PLEASE HELP!!!!
Posted by:table40ne.
Time:12:12 pm.
I need to add one and a half beats to extend the last note in the song (Nature's Hymn) that is available below. The song begins on a pick up (one and a half beats) and proper music notation calls for giving back this length at the end of the song. I cannot get Finale Notepad to let me add more! Would someone with real Finale be able to do this for me so that I can send it to the publishing company tonight?

when you are done, please send the finished product to me via email me at Table40ne@yahoo.com. thank you so much!!!!!

Subject:Those basso continuo blues.
Posted by:telemann.
Time:2:38 pm.
After being told that having figured bass UNDER stave, would make the me the Antichrist to all continuo players, I decided to put the figures above. Looks better I agree. To get it to work, I lowered the bass staff a wee bit, in order to prevent collision with dynamic markings for the viola part. The only issue I am having is here:

I really can't drop the bass staff much more without making the page layout look wierd. Flipping the note stem doesn't have any impact either.
Any suggestions?

I'm actually a Sibelius user, but cannot find a forum on livejournal. Are any of you Finale users also familiar with Sibelius? I'm having trouble figuring out how to notate harmonics for a viola piece I'm entering into the program. I understand that in Finale there is a simple tool to change noteheads. This is not the case in Sibelius. Even on the Sibelius help center, I type in "harmonics" in the search bar, and absolutely nothing shows up. Has this program ACTUALLY completely forgotten about harmonics??

A friend of mine emailed me this morning and asked if I could fix the piece that she wrote. Since her piece is in g minor, she wants to add an Eb to the key signature and then add E naturals when necessary. I told her I would do it for her; however, I have Finale Notepad 2004, and I didn't realize that my program cannot change the key signature of a piece without transposing every note. Can someone with real Finale please change the key signature for me and leave the notes intact? She wants it by tomorrow and I really don't want to let her down!
Here is the file: http://download.yousendit.com/418EDE5A4EFB106C
If you can fix it, please save the completed file so that it can be opened in Finale 2004, and e-mail it to table40ne@yahoo.com

Subject:2nd movements within a single Finale document
Posted by:telemann.
Time:1:23 pm.
I have a multi-movement Sinfonia within a SINGLE Finale document. I have a question about headers and margins. What is a standard for indenting and margins on a new page that begins with a 2nd movement?

If anyone knows of an online PDF showing various styles or methods for doing this, I'd appreciate the links. Thanks so much!

I need help on using the lyric tool?

I am using the lyric tool for creating a figured bass. My question is: I enter one line. But how do you add another "verse."
Whats the keystroke for doing this? I am using Finale 2005b also.

Thanks so much.
